RESONANCES

In physics, resonance describes the phenomenon of increased amplitude that occurs when the frequency of a periodically applied force is equal to, or close to, a natural frequency of the system on which it acts.

We are glad to be part of the drive that has enabled the growth and dissemination of contemporary artistic practices in Colombia over these twenty years; the effort we have made has been magnified by the commitment of each of the artists, both in their work and in their interaction with the most diverse social actors.

This progressive growth, intrinsically related to resonance, has made the multiple meanings generated by a work of plastic art vibrate at different frequencies, as we can appreciate in this curatorial project, where waves emanate that tune in with our thoughts, our senses, and our actions.

The contemporary museum acts as an instrument that concentrates and disseminates the continuous flow of events; it permeates the system, questions history and society; it generates critical knowledge, and it is inclusive and decisive, since it always chooses commitment, choosing change as a constant dynamic.

We have witnessed how a small initiative that began with six universities — four from Bogotá, one from Antioquia, and one from Santander — with forty-two graduation projects in 2004, has grown to overflow not only the museum's limits but national borders, relations with other academic institutions, with other nations, and with a multitude of people.

That is twelve hundred artists, more than eighteen hundred theses, twenty-two catalogs, national and international recognitions, partnerships, exchanges, artist residencies, incentives for creation, a project room, growth of the permanent collection, the rise of new generations of Colombian artists, the development of research-creation, the professionalization of art, and the circulation of graduates through museum spaces and art fairs; an intensity rarely seen in favor of creators, which has had a positive impact on the cultural and academic fields.

The architectural spiral that shapes the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo has become an accelerator of young artists' vibrant expressions, a sum of efforts on the rise, a magnificent proliferation of creativity, an arrow which, as the founder of the Minuto de Dios organization, Fr. Rafael García Herreros, masterfully put it in his Parable of the Museum, "prospers in justice, moving forward with freedom and joy ahead of the inexorable curve of history".
