Working Voices

Working VOICES is a collaborative research project that aims to explore the qualities of the urban environment and the different dynamics woven together in the Barrio Minuto de Dios. From there, the project raises three basic questions regarding how we experience our freedom; the responsibilities and positions of social and personal ecologies; and how we respond to the constant change of social rituals.

Its most important feature is the broad scope of activities carried out by each of the parties involved. From a curatorial point of view, it opens up the possibility of gathering as much information as possible with the intention of listening to multiple voices. It also makes it possible to go beyond the barrier of the traditional exhibition, generating art projects with social components for the development of a critical attitude.

The curatorial process for “Working Voices” was led by the Dutch curator  Harm Lux, who provided a working link between the Minuto de Dios/Engativá community, and artists based in Bogotá and internationally from Lima, Berlin, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Leipzig and Zurich, in addition to an academic component that includes three local universities: Universidad Minuto de Dios, Universidad Nacional and Universidad de Los Andes. The program includes workshops, talks, and research on urban ecology.

After this academic exchange and a collective effort in the neighborhood (carried out by local leaders and artists, neighborhood residents, university students, artists from Latin America and Europe), the project concludes with an exhibition at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Bogotá (MAC) that includes performance actions, installations, videos, and other results of this research. Its opening will take place on Thursday, May 2 at 5pm, and it will be open to the public until June 30.
