In a society that appears passive in the face of artistic, political, or other forms of action in favor of freedom, dignity, and the defense of other higher goods for humanity, why do some people decide to take personal risks and even put their lives in danger to defend these ethical principles and values?

Today, widespread political apathy can be observed in several countries around the world. This situation is reflected in citizens' lack of participation in social processes; many individuals appear cynical or disillusioned toward bodies intended to carry out public debate. The direct consequence of this situation is a lack of citizen oversight of the powerful and of political institutions, creating a significant danger for democracy and general well-being.
Within this context, around the world there are people who have decided to dedicate their lives to bringing about social change. They are willing to put their personal safety, their very lives, at risk to achieve their ideals. Unlike individuals who have chosen to focus on the private sphere of their lives, they fight to contribute to the well-being of others. Why have they decided to risk themselves to protect “the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family”?
The exhibition by Verónica Giraldo and Christopher Campbell-Duruflé seeks to raise awareness and respect regarding the personal and professional challenges faced by human rights defenders in Colombia. It is a tribute to the seven participating Colombian human rights defenders, recognizing the strength of their convictions and their courage in the face of the suffering they have known and experienced. Caminos de compromiso is also an invitation to reflect on each of our own positions regarding the injustices in our country and the world, as well as on the relationships we maintain with other human beings, with the people we live alongside.
