The community of the Minuto de Dios neighborhood was built through the strengthening of bonds of solidarity among its residents; here, culture is a pillar of social development that enables access to, enjoyment of, and reflection on contemporary art processes.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Barrio Minuto de Dios, in 2008 we gathered and exhibited a collection of photographs of the founding families held in the archive of the Corporación Minuto de Dios. At one of the community meetings organized for this celebration, the idea arose of periodically bringing a work from the collection into homes in the neighborhood, and so we launched the program “ART AT HOME,” which has visited 35 families with an attendance of more than 250 people.
In each home we wanted to learn which object held special meaning for the family — whether because it was inherited, acquired through great effort, given to them by someone, or because it carried a memory that marked their lives; the goal was to make them aware of the heritage values present in their own homes.
THE HOUSE IN THE MUSEUM is the complement to the ART AT HOME project, in which its participants share, within the museum setting, their relationship with objects that carry stories and meanings; it is a community curatorship that celebrates the values of the residents of the Barrio Minuto de Dios and establishes new levels of dialogue between a museum and a community that were ahead of their time in giving culture a social meaning throughout the 50 years of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Bogotá’s existence.
The show opens on May 26 at 6:00 pm and will be open to the public until June 26, 2016.
